Anton Raphaël Mengs
(Aussig,1728 - Rome,1779)Portrait of Isabel Parreño Arce, Ruiz de Alarcón y Valdes, marquise de Llano
An inscription on thebackof the canvas indicates that Mengs painted this portrait of Isabel Parreño when she was twelve and a half years old: she has the big eyes of a young girl, and the hint of a mischievous smile, brilliantly communicated by the artist. Mengs made a later depiction of the same sitter (Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum) in which she is represented full-length.
Isabel Parreño y Arce was married in 1765 to José Augustin de Llano, Knight of the Military Order of Santiago. As Prime Minister of the Duchy of Parma, he was created Marquess of Llano in1772 by Charles III of Spain, and became Spanish ambassador to the court of Vienna between 1786 and 1794.
