Compasses, astrolabes, globes, and mallets are the professional tools of geographers, astronomers and sculptors, but when they appear in paintings they often stand as symbols, alluding to other, more elevated meanings.
In its new display the Galleria Canesso juxtaposes actual instruments of the kind used on a daily basis over two centuries ago and paintings by Preti, Van Dalem and Petrini in which the same items take on values that transcend their merely functional qualities.
